Celebrating New Year’s Eve at the lantern festival on Pender Island is always an event. Visitors and residents alike, come out to enjoy the performance and dance lit mostly by fire at the edge of Magic Lake.
Shadow dancers and stilt walkers entertained the crowd.
The hoop and fire dancers were amazing too.
Even though each year the celebration is similar, there are always a few variations to hold your interest. This year the differences were not just in the performances, but also in the weather. The wind and rain made for an unpredictable lantern release. A few caught fire before launching, a couple crashed onto the frozen lake, many floated off in strange directions above the crowd. Perhaps not the serene lighting of lanterns that was planned, but it was certainly interesting (and a little exciting at times too!).
Happy New Year!
